Photo: Pixabay. St. Joseph is mentioned by the evangelists Matthew and Luke. According to both Gospels, Joseph is a descendant of David: a link between David's royal family and the Messiah. He was a man of faith and trust, knew the divine mysteries, a man of great silence. As the husband of the Virgin Mary, he took the place of the Father in Jesus. We do not know how long Joseph lived. Joseph is last mentioned during his Easter pilgrimage with twelve year old Jesus. Public veneration of St. Joseph started in the West only in the 14/15 centuries. The feast has been on the Roman calendar since 1621. Then Pope Pius IX. declared him the patron saint of the church in 1870.
